Luna nanoWorks Receives Tech Council's Leadership Award

Luna nanoWorks, a division of Luna Innovations Incorporated, is the recipient of the 2006 Southern Piedmont Technology Council (SPTC) Leadership in Science and Technology Award. This award is given to honor developing uses of technology in science and research. Recipients are selected based on how they have demonstrated support of the mission of the SPTC, impacted the community, raised awareness of the Southern Piedmont region, and marketed the region to other areas in Virginia and the nation.

Luna nanoWorks opened in Danville, VA in November, 2004 with a goal of transforming the Southside economy by promoting a high-technology image for the region and offering “new economy” jobs. Luna nanoWorks is developing products empowered by nanomaterials, with an initial focus on a medical imaging applicarion. The division is manufacturing high quality carbon nanomaterials, including single wall carbon nanotubes and proprietary TRIMETAPHERE™ carbon nanomaterials.

Additionally, Luna nanoWorks is assisting in the development of a nanotechnology technician training course in the Manufacturing Engineering Technology Program at Danville Community College.

SPTC’s Fifth Annual Technology Stars Awards Banquet was held June 12, 2006 at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research in Danville, Virginia. The Council works primarily with the counties of Franklin, Halifax, Henry, Patrick, Pittsylvania, and the cities of Danville and Martinsville in Virginia. The keynote speaker was Virginia Secretary of Technology Aneesh Chopra. Dr. Robert Lenk, CEO Luna nanoWorks Division, accepted the award on behalf of the company.
