Nanomaterial Safety

Carbon nanomaterials are both old and new. And, although these materials are present in small quantities in nature, they have not been available in large quantities until recently through the advances in manufacturing. As is typical for any new substance, there is controversy surrounding the question of the risks of exposure to nanomaterials. As a company, Luna Innovations' policy is to be proactive in identifying any potential hazards and protecting its workforce and its neighbors from harm.

We had safety in mind when we retrofitted our nanoWorks facility in Danville, Virginia, which is located in an 1870s tobacco warehouse. In this 24,000-square-foot manufacturing area, we designed nanomaterial reactors that are completely enclosed in vented exhaust hoods employing a unique one (1) nanometer custom "dust" collection system. Additionally, Luna has had third party verification to assure these systems are working as designed and the facility is Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspected for compliance.
